Ingredients

1 large sweet onion (like a Vidalia)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 large eggs

1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)

Olive oil spray

Instructions

Prepare the Onion: Cut off the top of the onion and peel the outer layers. Place the onion upside down on a cutting board. Starting about 1 inch from the bottom, carefully slice down to create 8-12 petal-like sections without cutting all the way through the root. Gently pull apart the petals.

Make the Coating: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.

Set up the Breading Stations: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until combined. In another bowl, place the breadcrumbs.

Coat the Onion: Dip the blooming onion into the flour mixture, making sure to coat all the petals thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat it with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure they stick well.

Spray and Arrange: Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C). Once preheated, spray the blooming onion generously with olive oil spray. Place it in the air fryer basket with the petals spread out.

Air Fry the Onion: Cook in the air fryer for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through. The onion should turn golden brown and become crispy.

Serve: Remove from the air fryer and let it cool for a minute. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as a spicy ranch or homemade aioli.
